Paintbrush is coming together nicely. The jumps still have a way to go before they are up to the caliber of last season but they are still fun. The jibs, though few, are set damn near perfect. I keep hearing that the plan is to wait until the contests are finished and then they are going to stack everything up. Taller jumps, taller landings, more rails and jibs, etc. Hopefully this plan goes through.

Paintbrush has been SUPER fun so far this year.
My only criticism is:
Like last year, they started the first jump to close to the start mound. If they pushed it 15 – 20 feet down hill I think it would give that much more room to pick up speed. Either that or push the start mound back from the jump. This jump is reduced to a set up jump because there is no speed there to be able to really get a spin off of it. Unless you start up above the start mound. But then you can’t see the jump. I don’t know if either of my solutions would work but something needs to be done to address this problem.
My second criticism of the current set up has already been partially addressed. It’s the third jump. (the “step up”) Just like the one in Conway’s, it’s neither a table nor a step up. Its right in between. It HAS gotten better than it was when it was first built but it’s still not quite there. I assume they will take care of it when they do the rebuild.
Third is the placement of the first jib. The way its set up is DOPE. It’s a 25′flat box set at about a 15 degree angle up kicking you right into a nice little tranny. The issue I have is that it is WAY to close to the 3rd jump and it’s to far to the right of the run. So, say you do a trick that sends you to the left side of the landing. For a regular footer say a front 5 off the heels and you drift a little to the left. Now, not only do you have to scrub almost all of your speed but you also have to cut all the way across the run. This plays huge on the quality of the park throughout the day. Slamming the breaks equals speed bumps in the snow.

I agree with everything you said Adrian. But mostly with the raking of the jumps. They got torn up really fast, which is understandable with the snow conditions. All I know is that last year you couldnt ride the park without seeing Park Crew in there, either asking how everything is or slipping/raking the lips. It sucks when you go to spin and you wash out or catch something in a huge rut off the take off. Other than that Park Crew is doing a good job.
Did anyone notice problems with the Conway’s jumps today as well?
everything’s truly been on point- after the this weekends contest- LET’S MAKE tHE jUMP’S BiGGeR PLEASE…..
Park Krew’s been doing a great job-
Mother Nature’s been hooking up great weather- and perfect snow-
that first jump needs a little something something, and what adrian said about the jib line, little bit to close. Park crew has been doing a great job, But dont be shy i wanna see your face out there. Lets stay positive and have some fun.
sweet point n shootin
Lets try and address some of those issues shall we. as we all know, January (which is the month that P.B. was built) didn’t bless us with very much snow. This forces park feature placement to be designed around slope and terrain. the reason the first jump is where it is is because there is a natural break in the run at that location and this is required for a good landing. pushing the drop in up hill cant be done because the run turns at that location and would also put us outside of the “park boundary”. However we could try addressing this issue by stacking up the drop in. The placement of the first jib is the same issue as the first jump, it had to go there for us to have a landing for that feature. Yes P.B. will be getting a total face lift over the next two weeks and this issue will be addressed. As for the rake lap, i was not here that day but what i heard was that the crew didn’t finish opening the parks until 10:15 and they were asked to rake the jumps at 11:00. It’s hard to imagine that they were in need of maintenance. However this is only what i heard. On the contrary, I want to thank the park riders for their CONSTRUCTIVE criticism and we always appreciate hearing your ideas. I hope you guys continue to enjoy Timberlines Parks and look forward to seeing you out in them.
Travis, thank you soooo much for coming on here and discussing this stuff with us. It’s hard to remember sometimes that you guys have to work with what nature gives you so it’s great you’re willing to school us from time to time. This is why this blog was started. To open a dialogue between the riders and the Park staff. In case people don’t know, Travis is the parks manager and just an overall cool guy. We all look forward to seeing what you are going to do with the parks now that these contests are almost over.
Now let me address what went down the other day. We got to Paintbrush at 9:15 and it was open. So I don’t know why anyone would say they didn’t open till 10:15. We started filming right away and yes, about 11am is when we asked the crew to do a quick rake lap and they said no problem. We made sure to ask nicely and did NOT demand anything. But the fact that 6 runs later nothing had been done was very upsetting since we were there trying to film for some promotional stuff for Timberline. Any other day we wouldn’t have cared much. We would have been riding pow. But since we were trying to get stuff done for Timberline, it made it very frustrating. We ended up cutting our session short because the take offs were so hammered. The new snow on the take offs was what made them deteriorate so badly and so fast. A lot of people were complaining and I hate to see that. As far as your crew is concerned, the only constructive criticism I feel I need to give, is spending more time on jump maintenance. The rails seem to get a lot of attention but I never see the jumps actually getting raked. Sometime a slip just doesn’t do it. Other than that, I think you are ALL doing a GREAT job.
Again Travis I want to thank you sooooo much for taking the time to discuss this stuff with us. It says a lot about you as well as Timberlines commitment to the progression of the parks.
Oh snap it appears there are many mixed feelings floating around out there. Since Travis educated on park design and lay out i will elaborate on some day to day stuff. I was the manager on duty that Tuesday and i feel directly responsible if the parks were not up to par in everyone’s eyes, however you must understand there is a lot more that goes into a day than raking a jump for one group to film on. Tuesday was a POW day and to say the crew was out riding instead of working would be false. With new snow comes many tasks, the Paint brush park was open before 9 that day, however not all the features in the Conways park were open til after 10. You have to realize we have more parks on the mountain than the one you may be riding, and do to current staffing issues only four guys on the hill on Tuesdays. New snow conditions will create more ruts than usual throughout all the parks not just one. Aside from the general maintenance that the public knows as “our job” there are also other things that our job involves i.e. 8 inches of new snow means digging out the rail garden so it doesn’t disappear, and also kind of specific to that day, assisting ski patrol with an accident investigation form a potentially serious accident on Conways quarter the day before. Again as the manager on duty for the date in question my deepest apologies. We are trying for you guys!
what nature gives you timberlines parks are so week compared to any other park off of mt.hood.its childs play they make no effort it seems like to push jumps that give you any hangtime!! they have not changed at all.you can go to the eastcoast and there are better jumps at resorts that have gotten less half the snow!!!!and also this same eastcoast resort has a 600 foot halfpipe and only a 3 month season!!!!timberline needs to step it up and quit making excuses!!seriously!! it took leaving there to realize how bad it is!!!
ya all need to move basically anywhere but here…timberline needs to checkout waterville valley, and 7springs two resorts that get no snow and make it happen.
post my comments doesnt hurt anything this shit needs to be heard
Johnny, like I told Travis, thank you soooo much for educating us. This is totally why we made this site. Please don’t think we don’t appreciate all you guys do for us. And we think you’re doing a great job. I’m very sorry if my comments came off sounding like I was talking shit. That wasn’t my intent at all. However, I’m glad we were able to get this conversation out there so people know what you guys deal with on a day to day basis. We can’t wait to learn more. If you ever want to send me some behind the scenes footage of you guys getting shit dialed or something I’d be stoked to post it for everyone to see.
Thanks again
So what are your suggestions Humphreys?
